On the Brussels Attacks

We are at the Next Century Foundation are very saddened by the news from Brussels. Our thoughts are with people of Brussels following this mornings horrific attacks.

BREAKING: Brussels is in a state of emergency today after at least 31 people were killed in a coordinated terrorist attack on the capital’s airport and metro system.

Many more are reported to have been injured.

Two explosions hit Zaventem Airport at around 07:00 and another blast took place at Maelbeek Metro Station one hour later, the station is situated near the headquarters of the European Union.

The attacks come four days after the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, who was captured in the Belgian capital in relation to November’s terror attacks in Paris last year. So far, there are no verified claims of responsibility for today’s attack but those involved are likely to be affiliated with the so-called Islamic State.

All flights and train services in and out of the country both have been cancelled. Following the explosions, EU institutions are at alert level Orange, with all meeting on premises and outside cancelled.
